Jiangsu University, situated in a beautiful and well-known historic and cultural city on the southern bank of the Yangtze River----Zhenjiang, is a comprehensive teaching and research type university featuring engineering. Jiangsu University is one of the key universities in China and is among the first batch of colleges and universities that are authorized to confer doctor degrees, master degrees and engineering master degrees. Jiangsu University ranks among the top hundred universities in China in terms of comprehensive school-running ability. The origin of Jiangsu University traces back to Sanjiang Normal School founded by such patriots as Zhang Zhidong in 1902. In August, 2001, upon the approval of the Ministry of Education, Jiangsu University was founded by merging Jiangsu University of Science and Technology, Zhenjiang Medical College and Zhenjiang Teacher’s College. Under the university, there are 24 schools and colleges with a full-time student enrolment of 32,000. Jiangsu University has an area of over 133 hectares with a total floor space of 1,400,000 square meters. The main campus is as beautiful as a painting and has been called “Eastern Suburb Garden” in Zhenjiang.

    Teaching Jiangsu university has been graded as excellent in the nation-wide assessment of undergraduate education quality in institutes of higher learning, obtained a national-level teaching achievement award and 27 provincial teaching achievement awards.Now there are 69 undergraduate specialties.
   Discipline Building and Graduate Education  Jiangsu University is complete in disciplines, including engineering, science, medicine, literature, economics, law science, administration, history, education, etc. There are 5 post-doctoral scientific research mobile stations, 5 Grade One disciplines conferring doctoral degrees, 28 doctor programs and 95 master programs. There are 1 state-level key discipline, 3 disciplines to be fostered as candidates for state-level key disciplines, 1 lab to be fostered as candidate for state-level key lab, 10 provincial key disciplines, 8 provincial key labs and engineering centers, 16 engineering master degree conferring fields and 1 MBA program. There are over 5,000 full-time post-graduate students.
Scientific Research   In recent years, more than 300 achievements have been awarded national or ministerial or provincial scientific and technical achievement prizes; over 100 achievements have been approved to be state patents. Both the number of applications for patents and the number of applications approved rank the thirty-sixth in all the colleges and universities in China. In the ranking list of independent intellectual property competitiveness of China’s scientific and technological institutions in 2003, Jiangsu University ranked the forty-fourth.
